Children’s Karate at the Myrtle Hall in Burley
The aim of the class is to improve concentration, co-ordination, balance and confidence.
Each class starts with an eighteen part exercise program designed to put every major joint in the body through it’s full range of movement in a slow, gentle way. These exercises are beneficial at any age.
The children are not only being equipped to fend off the playground bully but also the growing immobility of old age in later life.
Occasionally each child is also asked to lead others through the eighteen exercises. Leading a class is the beginning of developing leadership skills alongside the concentration to follow a class.
Every week the basic strikes of Karate are practised on the kicking shield and focus mitts. Being able to hit hard with fists, feet and elbows is a great confidence giver to any child.
Circuit training is a popular aspect of the class which aims to improve the general strength, fitness and stamina of the students as well as being a release for excess energy!
Two person sparring drills are fun with a competitive edge to develop and sharpen reflexes. They give the student a chance to put the moves into practice in a controlled way.
The grading system followed by the club employs the standard colour belt system.
Students are encouraged to progress through the lower lighter colour belts of white and yellow to the darker higher belts of purple and brown. Dedicated students can achieve the much coveted black belt and even progress beyond it.
One student who now travels to China to train with a world renowned master sometimes come back to help with seminars and gradings.
Each lesson concludes with a short story often concerning a samurai warrior, wise sage or old monk with each tale holding a moral life lesson.
These oriental wisdom stories are balanced out by tales from local history or facts about the beautiful and unique forest that these lucky children are growing up in.
