Walking

One of the most relaxing and enjoyable ways to not only relax but also keep fit while breathing in the New Forest air. There are many miles of wonderful walks to discover in the New Forest.

If you drive to the Forest make sure you park in one of the official car parks. They are free, and keep vehicles off the verges and from blocking access for emergency services.

Horse Riding and Pony Trekking

Many people like to relax by horse riding in the Forest. Either by bringing their horse or pony to the National Park or by visiting one of the many horse riding schools and stables in the area.

Cycling

Cycling in the New Forest is a great way to discover and explore the area. Either on road or cycle tracks, cycling can be a fun and relaxing way to keep fit and active during your stay in the New Forest. Plus it is a delightful way to explore. There are many cycle hire companies based in the New Forest who hire out mountain bikes. It is important that you stick to the roads or the approved cycle tracks though.

Dog Walking

For many years the only dogs allowed onto the Forest were ones which could fit through the Rufus Stirrup. This was used to prevent large dogs which could bring down game from being on the the ‘royal forest’. Dogs which were too large, were maimed! The good old days…

Nowadays common sense applies and the Forest welcomes responsible dog owners and their pets. If your dog is a danger to the Commoner’s stock, will run after children, cyclists, then please keep your canine friend on a lead. Dogs have been killed by ponies and horses so it is in your interests to keep them under control. Please pick up any dog mess as well.
